Job description

Payroll Officer – Workers Compensation | Part-Time Contract | Fully Remote

Job title : Payroll Location : Melbourne

  • 2.5–3 Days Per Week | Fully Remote
  • 12-Month Contract | Immediate Start | Potential to Extend
  • Ideal for a Payroll Officer with Workers Compensation experience seeking flexible contract work

The Opportunity

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Payroll Officer with a background in workers compensation to step into a flexible, fully remote contract role with a large, well-known Australian employer. Following a recent transition to self-insurance and significant growth through acquisition, this organisation has created a dedicated role to manage the workers compensation payroll function within their Wellbeing team.

The role sits at the intersection of payroll and workers compensation – you won’t be running the full payroll, but you’ll be the key person ensuring injured workers are paid correctly, wage instructions are submitted on time, and reimbursements from the insurer are accurately reconciled. Working days are fixed around the payroll run cycle, giving you structure and predictability in a part-time arrangement.

The Challenge

Working closely with the Workers Compensation Advisor, some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and submitting accurate WC wage instructions to the payroll team ahead of each pay run
  • Managing wage top-ups, incapacity payments and total entitlements for injured workers
  • Calculating Pre-Injury Average Weekly Earnings (PIAWE) across jurisdictions
  • Reconciling wage reimbursements received from the insurer back to payroll records
  • Allocating WC wage reimbursements across business units and cost centres
  • Processing and allocating workers compensation and third-party provider invoices
  • Acting as the operational link between payroll, finance, claims and TPAs
  • Supporting self-insurance governance, audit readiness and compliance reporting

The Expertise

To be successful in this role, you will bring the following:

  • Solid payroll experience, ideally gained within a large employer in retail, logistics, manufacturing or healthcare
  • Hands-on exposure to workers compensation wage management — PIAWE calculations, incapacity payments, wage top-ups
  • Experience reconciling WC wage reimbursements or working with insurer remittances
  • Exposure to a self-insured employer or TPA/insurer environment is highly regarded
  • Familiarity with national workers compensation legislative requirements across VIC and/or NSW
  • Strong attention to detail and confidence working within tight payroll run deadlines
